Targeted Parenting Plans Framework (TPPF) is developed and delivered by Claire Whyte, Accredited I.A.H.I.P. Psychotherapist. https://merrybower.com

Targeted Parenting Plan’s Frame work (TPPF) was created by Claire Whyte following 3 years of development, which has proved to be very successful for families across Ireland. One of the benefits is that it is completed in a short length of time.

TPPF is a structured plan designed to support separated and high-conflict families, aiming to improve family dynamics, relationships, and their child’s well-being. As it is not a therapeutic intervention, TPPF involves carrying out targeted, sometimes challenging questions with both parents individually to help them to focus on how the conflict is impacting their children rather than focusing on their own issues. This is achieved through effective communication, where parents know the goal of the intervention by creating clear boundaries.

The framework includes 3-5 sessions over a 5-6 week period. The process is as follows:

  1. Intake sessions with both parents.

  2. A child observation; however, if a child is in play therapy as one professional is enough to be working with the child, the facilitator will speak with the play therapist. The purpose of this meeting is not to violate the confidentiality of the child's therapy space, but to get the therapist's input into the plan based on their knowledge of the child.

  3. The facilitator will create a tailored plan for the family based on the meetings.

  4. The plan is explained in detail as to the rational of what is in the plan and the plan is given to both parents.

  5. Then it is reviewed after 2 weeks, and any adjustments needed will be applied to the plan.

Since I have taken part in this training, I understand how the framework is used, and I have asked the court to refer two families for this TPPF with Claire because I was already working with the family.

Going forward, I advise this TPPF model is simple, practical, effective and less invasive. Early use of a Targeted Parenting Plan may help families reach practical agreements more quickly, avoid the emotional and financial costs associated with court processes and is something that I would recommend should happen before parents end up in the court and before carrying out a Section 32 report.

In my practice, the recommendations I make are practical and generic but tailored to meet the family’s needs based on the information gathered. I don’t usually recommend that parents spend a set time of maybe 10 minutes where they are present to their children in a meaningful way. Depending on the age of their children this may involve art, playing cards, playing with Lego, doing nails, reading a book, etc., For an older child, it may involve sitting beside them when they do their thing and going in the car for a drive.
